Information for Prospective Kelp Forest Ecology Students
Fall 2003
Requirements:
1) Scientific Diving Certification: You have two options…
A. UCSC Scientific Diving Certification quarter long program.
B. A concentrated version of the course is offered 1-2 weeks before the Fall quarter begins. It is 9 days long, 12 hours per day.

2) Ecology background: You definitely need to have taken the 20A,B,C series or an equivalent. It is preferred that you have also taken Biol. 150 (Ecology) or ES 24, and especially Biol. 160 (Marine Ecology). If you have not taken an upper division ecology course, recommended Ecology texts that you should read over the summer include:
Krebs, Charles J. 1994. Ecology: the experimental analysis of distribution and abundance. Published Menlo Park, Calif.: Benjamin Cummings, 4th Edition.
Begon, M., J. L Harper, and C.R. Townsend. 1996. Ecology: individuals, populations, and communities. Published Cambridge, Mass.: Blackwell Science, 3rd Edition.
3) Required texts: There are three required texts for the course
i. Algae identification - Louis Dreuhl's Pacific Seaweed identification book
Druehl, L. 2001. Pacific Seaweeds: a Guide to Common Seaweeds of the West Coast. Sea Challengers, Monterey, CA.
ii. Fish identification - either Dan Gotshall's or Paul Humann's Pacific Coast Inshore Fishes identification book
Humann, P. 1996. Coastal fish identification: California to Alaska. New World Publications, Inc.
Gotshall, Daniel. 1981. Pacific Coast inshore fishes. Published Sea Challengers; Ventura, Calif.: Western Marine Enterprises, 2nd Edition.
iii. Invertebrate identification - Dan Gotshall's Pacific Coast Marine Invertebrates identification book
Gotshall, Daniel. 1994. Guide to marine invertebrates: Alaska to Baja California. Published Monterey, Calif.: Sea Challengers.
4) Course scheduling: This course is 2 mornings a week from 8 - 12. However, because this is a field course, you should not plan on taking other classes before 2:00 pm on days this class meets.
5) Enrollment codes: Only students that have already taken the scientific diving course, have senior standing, have many of the ecology prerequisites, OR need to enroll for financial aid purposes will receive an enrollment code before the first day of class.
