DIGESTION by RESTRICTION ENZYMES

Restriction sites are specific sequences in a DNA molecule that are target sites for cutting by an RESTRICTION ENZYME. Here, a 6.8 kb circular molecule (a plasmid) has two recognition sites for a particular enzyme and is attacked by molecules of that enzyme. Each enzyme molecule will cut many plasmid molecules.

The product of complete digestion (cutting at both sites) is a pair of fragments 5.5 kb and 1.3 kb in size.
